Meet the Faculty
Nyama McCarthy-Brown
Nyama (Nya) McCarthy-Brown is a Future Faculty Fellow, currently pursuing her doctorate in dance at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Originally from San Francisco, Nyama is a graduate of the San Francisco School of the Arts. She received her BA Degree in Political Science from Spelman College and completed her MFA degree in Performance and Choreography at the University of Michigan in April 2003.
While at Michigan, she served as both a Graduate Student Instructor and Adjunct Lecturer and was a recipient of a Moody Fellowship which allowed her to conduct research on African dance through a summer residency in South Africa. Her dance studies have also taken her to Europe.
Nyama has been teaching dance since 1992. She has been a guest artist for Dekalb School of the Arts, Spelman College and Ballethnic. Nyama was the founder and director of the dance program and Royal Essence Dance Company at Martin Luther King, Jr. High school in Lithonia, Georgia.
As well as the dance program and company at Carver School of the Arts in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to her studies, she is currently teaching and coordinating outreach for the Temple University Dance Department, and a new Teaching Artist for the Dancing Classrooms program in Philadelphia.
